Skin boosters. The science behind this hyaluronic acid injection moisturiser
What are skin boosters?
Skin boosters are hyaluronic acid injections meant to provide long lasting, intense hydration to the skin from within. Hyaluronic acid is capable of binding up to 1000 times its own molecular weight in water, therefore it is the gold standard ingredient in moisturising products such as Dr Bob Remedies Hydromax Essence as well as hydrating treatments such as Silkpeel Dermalinfusion Ultra Hydrating Pro Infusion Serum.
Is it a dermal filler?
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are typically used to replace lost volume, to reduce lines and wrinkles. Skin Boosters are used mainly for hydration and bio revitalisation.
Are skin boosters merely for hydration only? Well, no, because hyaluronic acid when injected into the skin also has a bio revitalisation function.
Bio Revitalisation is a procedure focused on the repair of damaged tissues. Injecting the skin with hyaluronic acid stimulates our body to produce our own collagen and activates metabolism under the skin hence promoting skin rejuvenation.
In summary, bio revitalisation function of Hyaluronic acid injection is as follows
- Stimulates collagen production
- Increase skin elasticity
- Provide antioxidant function
- Speed up wound healing
- Lessen inflammation

Am I a suitable candidate?
Skin booster bio revitalisation is recommended for almost anyone, especially when we age as our own hyaluronic acid begins to decline significantly. Our skin would start to lose moisture, leading to dryness, loss of tone and elasticity and higher tendency for inflammation.
What are the different skin boosters available in Malaysia?
There are many brands of skin boosters on the market, such as the original Restylane Skinboosters, Teosyal Redensity I, and Juvederm Volite. The main difference is in the concentration of hyaluronic acid and the degree of cross-linking. Some products even include nutrients and vitamins into their skinbooster, to provide additional benefits such as anti-oxidant and skin lightening.
One notable ingredient that has been added to Hyaluronic acid skin boosters is Succinic Acid as found in the Hyalual Smart, Light and Booster. Succinic acid is a potent antioxidant and copper chelating agent with the ability to inhibit tyrosinase enzyme. These injectables therefore has a role in pigmentation treatment.
How is skin booster injected?
Skinboosters are either done with an injector device (a.k.a mesogun) or manual injections. It is important to know how to inject the different products, as the different products have different characteristics.
Mesotherapy method is used for non-stabilised hyaluronic acid injection, where the product is injected into various skin layers. Skinboosters that contain stabilised hyaluronic acid must be injected in the area of deep dermis and subcutis instead.
Undesirable effects and results may occur due to too superficial placement of stabilised hyaluronic acid skinbooster such as the development of papules/nodules formation, especially in thin skin. Proper injection by an experienced doctor will be able to avoid these complications.
Dr Bob Clinic skin boosters
At Dr Bob Clinic, our skin boosters treatment is performed with a blunt cannula. It has been shown that blunt cannulas are associated with lesser side effects and is the preferred method by patients. With less penetration points and reduced risk of bruising, patient comfort is increased.
The best benefits of using cannulas? The cannula can be used in a fanning technique to distribute the product much more evenly compared to needles. It also results in less pain for patients, resulting in higher satisfaction for patients and better compliance to the treatment.
How long is the treatment?
With cannulas, it is not necessary to numb the face as with mesotherapy, as there is much less injection points and therefore less pain. The procedure can be completed within 15-20 minutes.
Do i need to repeat treatment?
Based on the latest guideline, the regimen for skin booster recommends two to three treatment sessions monthly, then the results should last up to a year after completion.
For subsequent maintenance, it is recommended to have another two treatment sessions between 9 to 12 months after the initial treatments.
When will I see results?
Results may vary between individuals, but typically you would be able to appreciate results 1-2 weeks after the treatment. It is best to combine the hyaluronic acid skin booster injections with moisturising serums such as Dr Bob Remedies Hydromax Essence and treatments such as Silkpeel Dermalinfusion Ultra Hydrating Pro Infusion Serum to achieve faster results and to maintain the optimal skin hydration.
Is there any recovery time required?
There is virtually no significant downtime associated with the cannula technique. That being said, there is a very minimal risk of bruising, swelling and infection, which is very unlikely when done by professionals.
